Some sources suggest that Ay may have been responsible for both Tutankhamun's death and Smenkhkare's death. If this is true, it would mean that Ay had effectively taken control of Egypt himself.

Fortunately for Ay, Ankhesenamun appeared to have remained loyal to him even after her husband's death. She eventually gave birth to a son named Tutankhaten (later renamed Tutankhamun). This effectively ensured that Ay remained in power until he also died without an heir several years later.
